Ravens' defense loses another key cog to Jets
Rex Ryan got his man, again.

Despite some late interference from the Broncos, free-agent safety Jim Leonhard signed a three-year contract with the New York Jets on Tuesday.

The free-agent happy Denver Broncos entered the bidding for the ex-Ravens safety Tuesday after Leonhard was thought to be a slam-dunk signing for Ryan and the Jets. But after reconsideration of Denver's late bid, Leonhard went ahead with his previous verbal agreement with New York.

Leonhard was one of Baltimore's biggest defensive surprises last year after signing a free-agent deal with the Ravens. The ex-Bills safety registered a career-high 69 tackles and six passes defended for Baltimore's No. 2-ranked defense in 2008.

"He's a smart player that can get guys lined up in the secondary and was one of the best tacklers on that Ravens defense," Ryan said. "He's always around the ball, brings everything he has on every play and will be a great addition to our group of defensive backs."

Leonhard joins Bart Scott in leaving the vaunted Ravens' defense this offseason, following former defensive coordinator Ryan to New York.

Leonhard will be replaced in the Ravens' lineup by three-year veteran Dawan Landry (who was on injured reserve for all of 2008) starting opposite All-Pro Ed Reed.

The Jets also officially announced they re-signed fullback Tony Richardson, who agreed to terms last week.
