NFL trying to start rookies on right path 2008-07-02
The Class of 2008 has no excuses.

If any of the 252 incoming NFL draft picks can't tell right from wrong after this week's Rookie Symposium, they probably never will.

The event caps the NFL's most expansive effort yet toward trying to keep rookies from getting into off-field trouble. Many of the messages players will hear — including some personally delivered by repentant NFL misfits — already were stressed in other league- and team-sponsored sessions following April's draft.

Of course, a quick scan of NFL headlines also provides plenty of other examples about what not to do.

We're now at 38 player arrests/citations since Super Bowl XLII. That's an increase of five incidents from the same span following last year's championship game, according to figures reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune. Players may later be cleared, but so far, charges were dropped for only three players (Denver defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, New York Giants defensive back Geoffrey Pope and free agent wide receiver Jerome Mathis).

As rookies were en route to Southern California for the symposium, two veteran defensive backs — New England's Willie Andrews (assault with a dangerous weapon/unlawful possession of a firearm) and Baltimore's Derrick Martin (marijuana possession) — were being arrested. It was the second offseason incident for Andrews, who was popped days after the Patriots' Super Bowl XLII loss for marijuana possession with intent to distribute.

Think his NFL career is now up in smoke?

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell's ongoing pleas for improved player behavior have fallen on deaf ears. There were 11 more arrests after Goodell announced strengthening of the league's personal conduct policy in late May. That includes three for drunk driving by players who easily could (and should) have avoided handcuffs by calling a cab.
