NFL GRIDIRON GUIDE: Romo's return bad for 'Skins
Marquee matchups

Cowboys (5-4) at Redskins (6-3)

Line: Cowboys by 1? Over/Under: 43 TV-Radio: Ch. 4, WFAN (660), 8:15 p.m.

Why watch: To see if T.O. spits again in DeAngelo Hall's face, cries, or maybe even does both. The Cowboys are desperate, and they get a break because Clinton Portis (knee) isn't expected to play. They come off a bye and get back Tony Romo, so there's no excuse for not giving a peak effort against an archrival. The pick: Cowboys

CHARGERS (4-5) at Steelers (6-3)

Line: Steelers by 5 O/U 42 1/2 4:15 p.m. TV-Radio: Ch. 2, WFAN (660)

Ben Roethlisberger (sore shoulder) has thrown eight picks in the last three games. San Diego's pass defense is horrible. Is there an edge buried in there? Pittsburgh's Willie Parker returns, and Team Norv (1-4 ATS away) has a genius for undermining itself. The pick: Steelers

Around the league

BRONCOS (5-4) at Falcons (6-3)

Line: Falcons by 6 1/2 O/U: 51 1 p.m.

Denver is so low on running backs that it picked up Lions reject Tatum Bell, and its defense might be the league's worst. Atlanta is 4-0 at home, all covers. Michael Turner runs wild and Matt Ryan shreds an injury-riddled secondary. The pick: Falcons

Raiders (2-7) at Dolphins (5-4)

Line: Dolphins by 10? Over/Under: 38? 1 p.m.

The byes are over, but Oakland's offense stopped showing up weeks ago. After getting 16 points in three games, Al Davis stripped coordinator Greg Knapp of his play-calling duties. Now he's picking up towels and making coffee runs. Marques Tuiasosopo can't throw, so he'd be a great fit in the Wildcat. The pick: Dolphins

Bears (5-4) at Packers (4-5)

Line: Packers by 3 1/2 O/U: 42 1/2

1 p.m.

Aaron Rodgers gave up two safeties against the Vikings, which not even Bad Rex Grossman ever did. He was Mediocre Rex against the Titans, playing just badly enough to lose. It's uncertain whether Rex or Kyle Orton (ankle) will start. The Pack is fading, and Chicago has had its number lately (4-1-1 ATS). The pick: Bears

Texans (3-6) at Colts (5-4)

Line: Colts by 8 Over/Under: 50? 1 p.m.

Beating the Pats and Steelers got the Colts back in the wild-card picture, but with little margin for error. Turnover-prone Houston is 0-4 away (one cover). Indy's defense is improving and Peyton Manning is getting sharper. The pick: Colts

Titans (9-0) at Jaguars (4-5)

Line: Titans by 3 Over/Under: 39? 1 p.m.

"Over" tickets on 10 wins by Jacksonville soon will overflow from Vegas dumpsters. Tennessee (8-1 ATS) is the season's nicest surprise, and Jacksonville one of its worst. It's a bad matchup for the Jags (0-4 ATS home), who no longer can match the Titans' physical style. The pick: Titans

Lions (0-9) at Panthers (7-2)

Line: Panthers by 14

Over/Under: 40 1 p.m.

After signing with the Lions, Daunte Culpepper e-mailed the AP: "I am encouraged by the commitment of ownership, the vision of management and the great potential of the team's talent." Insanity takes many forms. The Panthers (3-0-1 ATS home) will maul Daunte and his potentially 0-16 new pals. The pick: Panthers

Saints (4-5) at Chiefs (1-8)

Line: Saints by 5? Over/Under: 50 1 p.m.

Herm Edwards' Chiefs have lost 17 of 18, but they've covered three straight. "You play to win the bet." Did you see Drew Brees yelling at Jeremy Shockey? Getting two draft picks for Mr. Me was a steal for the Giants. The Saints' defense can't stop anybody, and the young Chiefs are still trying hard. The pick: Chiefs

Eagles (5-4) at Bengals (1-8)

Line: Eagles by 9 Over/Under: 41 1 1 1 p.m.

Coming off a draining loss to the Giants, Philly must avoid a letdown. The Bengals are on a roll for them (a win and a bye), but Philly is 3-0 (all routs) against lousy teams. The pick: Eagles

Vikings (5-4) at BUCS (6-3)

Line: Bucs by 4 Over/Under: 38? 1 p.m.

Rarely does the home/away vibe feel stronger. The Bucs are unbeaten and 4-0 ATS inside their pirate ship; Minnesota is 1-3 (one cover) on the road. Tampa should keep Adrian Peterson from going off and force Gus Frerotte into turnovers. The pick: Bucs

Cardinals (6-3) at Seahawks (2-7)

Line: Cardinals by 3 O/U: 47? 4:05 p.m. TV: Ch. 5

Favorites (69-69-4 ATS) went 6-7 (Ravens-Texans was a pick 'em). Only four losers covered, making winners 115-25-4. Achy Matt Hasselbeck should be rusty after missing five games, and Arizona has too much firepower for the flightless Gulls. The pick: Cardinals

Rams (2-7) at 49ers (2-7)

Line: 49ers by 6 1/2 Over/Under: 44 4:15 p.m.

Abandon hope, ye who wager here. The 49ers showed fire if not efficiency and should have beaten Arizona. The Rams rolled over like dogs for the Jets, and they're in a 2-5 ATS skid in San Francisco. The pick: 49ers

Browns (3-6) at Bills (5-4)

Line: Bills by 5 Over/Under: 42 TV-Radio: ESPN, WFAN (660), Monday, 8:30 p.m.

ESPN should hype this as the Downward Spiral Bowl. Buffalo is in a 1-4 skid, and Cleveland blew double-digit second-half leads at home in its last two. Jamal Lewis and Josh Cribbs accused unnamed Browns of quitting against Denver, and Romeo Crennel is under fire. At least the Bills still could turn it around. The pick: Bills

Ravens (6-3) at Giants (8-1)

Line: Giants by 7 Over/Under: 42 TV-Radio: Ch. 2, WFAN (660) 1 p.m.

The Ravens (7-2 ATS) swept the Browns by an average margin of 16 points, and the Giants (7-2 ATS) lost to Cleveland by 21. So, factoring in the three-point edge for home field, Big Blue should be a 34-point underdog.

Wait, it doesn't work that way. The Ravens' strong defense and rookie QB Joe Flacco have led a dramatic turnaround from a 5-11 embarrassment. They won at Cleveland, Miami and Houston, but this is their biggest challenge yet. Can Baltimore's No. 1 run defense (65.4 yards a game) stop the Giants' No.1 running game (169.9 yards)? Probably not. The pick: Giants
