NFL DRAFT: FALCONS NOTEBOOK: Cornerbacks on draft radar today

NFL DRAFT: FALCONS NOTEBOOK: Cornerbacks on draft radar today
Flowery Branch --- The Falcons will keep their focus on improving their defense today, the second day of the NFL draft.

They are set to address the cornerback position and like that some talented players remain undrafted. Domonique Foxworth, the team's top cornerback last season, signed with Baltimore during free agency.

Georgia's Asher Allen and New Mexico's Glover Quin, two cornerbacks the Falcons scouted, are still available.

quot;I'm looking forward to tomorrow to continue to add players,quot; Falcons coach Mike Smith said. quot;It can't get here quick enough.quot;

Jerry also can rush the quarterback

The Falcons drafted defensive tackle Peria Jerry in the first round primarily for his ability to stop the run, but they believe he will also give them badly needed help in the pass rush.

Pass-rushing was a lonely business for the Falcons last season, when they got 16.5 sacks from defensive end John Abraham and 17.5 sacks from nine other players. Reserve defensive end Chauncey Davis was second on the team with four sacks.

quot;[Jerry] had seven sacks this year from the defensive tackle position,quot; Smith said. quot;That's a very, very impressive number.quot;

Those seven sacks for Ole Miss were the fifth-most in the SEC last year. Jerry led the SEC in tackles for loss (18).

quot;He's a guy that can be very disruptive,quot; Smith said. quot;He creates plays in the backfield, and I think that's very important when you have negative-yardage plays presented by the defense.quot;

Tweeting from the Falcons on draft

Word that Jerry was the Falcons' first-round draft pick got out on Twitter from Falcons headquarters moments before it was announced by the NFL commissioner Roger Goodell.

So who was at the controls?

Not general manager Thomas Dimitroff or Smith.

quot;No, we weren't Twittering,quot; Dimitroff said with a smile. quot;Someone else was Twittering. I just learned again what that meant three days ago.quot;

Jerry's Ole Miss teammate picked

Jerry was the second consecutive first-round pick to come out of Ole Miss on Saturday. Rebels offensive tackle Michael Oher was taken 23rd by the Baltimore Ravens. Jerry was picked next.

quot;It was crazy,quot; Jerry said. quot;I got a call [from Oher]. It was really exciting for both of us to go like that.quot;
