Your Browns questions answered

Got a Browns question? Send it in. Submit your question to cleveland.com/heytony, and Plain Dealer Browns beat writer Tony Grossi will choose several to answer each Sunday here in the sports section. All of Tony's answers are archived online.

Q: Hey, Tony: You stated in one of your responses that the number of tackles is the "most meaningless statistic in the NFL." What would be the some of the more meaningful statistics in the NFL? I've also heard sacks are not the most meaningful. - Erik Appell, Mayfield Heights.

A: Hey, Erik: I didn't mean to imply that tackling is meaningless. The statistic is meaningless because tackling statistics are arbitrary on game reports and coaches adjust the numbers after video review. Tackles that are made within one or two yards of the line of scrimmage are meaningful. Tackles for loss is a meaningful statistic. Sacks are meaningful. Quarterback hurries. And, of course, any turnover is meaningful.

Q: Hey, Tony: If Dont? Stallworth is convicted of driving while under the influence, can his contract be terminated without the cap hit for violation of his contract? - Brad W., Parma.

A: Hey, Brad: Yes, it would be removed from the Browns' salary cap.

Q: Hey, Tony: With the Browns signing mostly career or current backups, is the new regime trying to have the best bench but the worst starters in the league? Also, why are they signing so many players 30 or older? It would seem that almost all their signings will have to be replaced within a year or two. - W.E. Greenfield, Bradenton, Fla.

A: Hey, W.E.: Eric Mangini said last week that he wanted to add veteran players to help forward his "program." The Browns also want to rebuild the roster from the bottom up.

Q: Hey, Tony: What are the Browns going to do about the WR position now? Do you see us taking Michael Crabtree in the first and then using our multiple second-round picks on LBs? - Jeff Smith, Naples, Fla.

A: Hey, Jeff: Crabtree is a viable option now at No. 5 for the Browns. I'm usually not an advocate of taking a receiver so high, however.

Q: Hey, Tony: Well, we have to ask the question, what do we do in Stallworth's absence? Free agency? Draft? - Todd Hollis, Massillon.

A: Hey, Todd: The Browns signed David Patten, who will be 35 by the season opener. I'm sure they'll add more receivers, pending Stallworth's legal process.
