GRADING THE GIANTS 2008-12-08
OFFENSE

D ... as in dropped. Not only the long pass from Eli Manning that fell through the arms of Domenik Hixon in the second quarter, but three others that weren't handled by receivers and probably should have been. "We're human, -- happens," said receiver Steve Smith, who had a drop as well. "What can you do? It sucks that we were on that side where it happened to us." Manning, the NFC Offensive Player of the Month in November, didn't carry through to December. He completed 13 of 27 for 123 yards. The offense converted only three of 11 third downs. Would you believe the Giants (3.7) had a higher yards-per-carry mark than the Eagles (3.5)?

DEFENSE

C+ Take away two big plays for 70 yards by Brian Westbrook and it's a different story. But a 30-yard run and a 40-yard catch created 14 points. They were unable to push the Eagles off the field in the third quarter. The Eagles were 12-for-13 on third-down conversions in one stretch. "They had a lot of third-and-shorts and we have to do a better job of tackling," Antonio Pierce said. "Several times we had them wrapped up and they would squeeze through past the first-down marker." Donovan McNabb was sacked once, on a play in which he tripped coming away from center.

SPECIAL TEAMS

B The Giants blocked a pair of field goals, one by Justin Tuck that was returned for a TD and the other by Terrell Thomas, who came around the corner to get a hand on the ball. Automatic A for special teams, right? Maybe, had the Giants not had their own field-goal attempt blocked. Hixon had two punt returns and went backwards on each, losing a total of 6 yards. Sinorice Moss returned kickoffs and averaged 21.5 yards on four of them. The Giants held DeSean Jackson to 8 yards per try on punt returns.

COACHING

C They had the right idea going deep with the wind at their back in the second quarter, but an open Hixon just dropped it. After that the aggressiveness of the play-calling took a hit. When they got the wind back in the third, they ran only six plays and passed on only one of them. They had three fourth-down attempts, and needing 4, 3, and 1 yards to convert, passed each time. They reached the red zone only once; that was late, when they scored their only offensive TD.
