Gonzo: Unstuffing the e-mail bag
While thinking about stuffing myself tomorrow, it's time for another peek inside the e-mail bag:

Andy Reid's most glaring weaknesses as a coach? Communication.

This quote about why he didn't tell Donovan McNabb he was benched is extremely troubling: "That's not what we do," Reid said. "That's how things are. I really don't care what anyone else thinks about that. The coach who coaches that player tells him, and then I address it afterward."

It's clear to me that Reid's communication style - which at times can simply be characterized as a lack of an ability to communicate - is having a detrimental effect on his team.

- Robert

Robert, Reid said there are procedures for that kind of thing - that the position coaches do the in-game benching. That would normally be fine. With McNabb, though, you have to make an exception. But Reid is either too inflexible or too timid to do something like that. I've had some truly dreadful bosses in my life. But even the worst of the worst (hello, Bucks County Courier honchos) had the guts to look me in the eye when things got grim. That's a lesson Reid ought to learn. - Gonzo

Reid made a political decision to pull McNabb. I know you can't say with a straight face that Kevin Kolb, who has never played in a meaningful situation in the NFL, was more likely than McNabb to pull out the win. By pulling McNabb, Reid put him on the line as the scapegoat for the loss and the season, an attempt to deflect the blame from himself.

- David

David, No, I can't say with a straight face that Kolb gave the team a chance to beat the Ravens. Then again, I can't say McNabb did, either. He had a 15 quarterback rating when they yanked him. Do you know how bad you have to be to have a 15 quarterback rating? Right now, just for typing this without errors, I have a 17 quarterback rating. Anyway, as I've said, I think the season is over. Might as well find out what they have (or don't have) in Kolb and move on. - Gonzo

What happened to Bob Ford? Was he terminated? A real shame. I hate to see the decline of the newspaper.

- Tom

Tom, Ford was caught in the boss' office with a small animal and a bottle of maple syrup. Lord knows what kind of evil intentions he had, but security escorted him from the building before he could put his plan in motion. - Gonzo (Ed. Note: Um, Ford is just on vacation. Pay no attention to Gonzo. He's like a stray dog that hangs around and won't leave.)

I'm not a Tony Romo fan. But your comments regarding his charitable deeds make you look like a jerk who wastes too much time watching weird and worthless shows like The Life and Times of Tim. ? Yeah, it sounds like self-serving PR for Romo, but your time would be better spent doing an occasional charitable deed rather than watching cynical, pinhead geek shows. ?

- John?

John, I do charity work five times a week. It's called Talkin'. - Gonzo

You people in the media are amazing. When they asked you about your occupational goals for the high school yearbook, what did you choose? Newspaper geek? Tax collector? Mortician?

Or better yet: waste management?

- R. Humphreys

R-Humphreys, I put adult film star, but my high school deleted it. Penncrest is so prudish. - Gonzo

Philadelphia Eagles Football practice was delayed nearly two hours this morning after a player reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on the practice field. Andy Reid immediately suspended practice while police and federal agents were called to investigate.

After a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that the white substance, unknown to the players, was the goal line. Practice was resumed after special agents decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance again.

- Chuck

McNabb compares favorably to John Elway at the same time in his career. Elway at 10 years was considered washed up by the Denver fan base who wanted Gary Kubiak to start. He didn't win Super Bowls until later in his career when a new coach, Mike Shanahan, put him in an offense in which he could succeed, surrounded him with two running backs, three wide receivers, a tight end and a fullback.

Unless you really want to write a column about Donovan winning a Super Bowl with another team, start concentrating on replacing Reid with a real GM (Ron Jaworski?) and an offensive coordinator that can bring the best out of his team.

- Arthur

Why don't the reporters stand up to Andy Reid and ask questions the fans would ask? They stand there and Reid talks to them like children. Reid doesn't answer any questions, and he wouldn't even tell McNabb he was benched.

P.S.: Bill Cowher is looking for a job.

- Joe

Well, we changed a linebacker, a defensive end, a safety and a quarterback halfway through the Ravens game. Nothing worked. Maybe Jeffrey Lurie will see we need a coaching change, but I doubt it.

- Ron

Suggestion for the next Eagles headline:

"The turkey is done."
