Baltimore Ravens Notes, Quotes 2008-08-11
--Ed Reed practiced for the first time Saturday, but the Ravens free safety was wearing some unexpected attire.

Running with the starting defense, Reed wore a red jersey like the quarterbacks, indicating that he couldn't engage in contact.

Reed had been on the physically-unable-to-perform list for the first two weeks of training camp with a shoulder injury.

Asked when Reed could be cleared for contact, coach John Harbaugh said. "It'll be soon. I don't know if it'll be before the next preseason game, but it'll be soon before the end of preseason."

--Samari Rolle, a starting cornerback for the Ravens for the past three seasons, reported to training camp before the first preseason game. He missed the first 11 days of training camp because he was mourning the death of his father. Harry Rolle suffered a heart attack two weeks ago.

After flying from South Florida, Rolle suited up for the morning practice. But Ravens officials had to tell him that he needed to pass a physical first.

"He's excited and ready to go," coach John Harbaugh said. "He's in great spirits in terms of being back with his teammates."

--The Ravens remain in constant contact with Terrell Suggs but are not certain when the team's franchise player will report.

Suggs has missed training camp to protest the franchise tag, which kept him from being a free agent this offseason.

"We do have an idea of what he's thinking, but it's just an idea right now," Harbaugh said of Suggs' projected return. "There's no certainty."

Asked if he thought Suggs would wait until the end of the preseason to come back, Harbaugh said, "I wouldn't say. I can't speak for him."

--In the second quarter of the Ravens' 16-15 preseason-opening victory over the New England Patriots, Yamon Figurs showed why he is so dangerous on special teams, returning a punt 52 yards to set up the Ravens' first touchdown and later running back a kickoff 48 yards.

"The guys were blocking really well, and they opened up some big holes," Figurs said. "I was just glad I could hit them fast enough to get through. Making plays like that will really help our offense. I'm glad we were able to put them in good positions to score."

--It was a good sign to see Fabian Washington make two interceptions in his Ravens debut.

Traded from the Oakland Raiders this offseason, Washington had one pick all last season. Washington came up with his first turnover -- an interception of Patriots backup quarterback Matt Cassel in the first quarter -- one play after Kyle Boller fumbled in Ravens territory.

Washington then finished the first half with his second interception in Ravens territory.

"You only get one chance to make a first impression," Washington said, "so I felt like I had to go out and make an impact."

QUOTE TO NOTE: "What a thrill it was to be the head coach of the Baltimore Ravens and be in front of this group of men. It's an honor to be part of this organization now." -- Ravens coach John Harbaugh, after his first game as an NFL head coach.
