Baltimore Ravens Notes, Quotes 2009-02-17

Baltimore Ravens Notes, Quotes 2009-02-17
--CB Chris McAlister had his contract terminated in a move that was expected. McAlister, 31, spent his first 10 years in the league with the team, but was benched after five games last season and wound up on injured reserve with a knee injury. He was due to earn $8 million in 2009.

"We want to thank Chris for all he did for the Ravens in the past 10 years," general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "He was a major contributor to many big wins, including the Super Bowl."

--After not receiving a vote from sports writers for the Associated Press offensive rookie of the year award, Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco proved more popular among fans. Flacco was named the Diet Pepsi NFL rookie of the year after becoming the first rookie quarterback in league history to win two playoff games.

"I would like to thank all the fans because this is a fan award," Flacco said after being given the trophy during Super Bowl week. "They've been voting every week and throughout the playoffs, which I'm sure helped a lot. It was a great year and I couldn't really imagine it going this way for myself."

--Before this year's Super Bowl, the last one played in Tampa was won by the Ravens. Then, they became the first Super Bowl winner to part ways with their starting quarterback.

So, would the Ravens have had a better chance to win a second Super Bowl if they had re-signed Trent Dilfer?

"I would have liked to have that opportunity," Shannon Sharpe said. "Even if you don't promise him the starting job, you owe him the obligation to allow him to compete for it. For them to unceremoniously get rid of him and say thank you but no thank you, I didn't think that's right.

"I voiced my displeasure at the time. But you look at the track record for Ozzie (Newsome, Ravens general manager) and it's hard to argue that. But they at least owed him that much."

--The Ravens retained 10 players who were with the team this past season, signing them to reserve/future list contracts for next season.

That includes signing eight players who were on the team's practice squad last season: Wide receivers Ernie Wheelwright and Edward Williams, offensive tackles Joe Reitz and Tre Stallings, running back Matt Lawrence, cornerback Anwar Phillips, guard Brian Johnson and tight end Isaac Smolko.

The Ravens also signed two players off injured reserve: defensive end Bryan Mattison, the son of new defensive coordinator Greg Mattison, and wide receiver Justin Harper, a seventh-round draft pick last season.

--The Ravens announced they have increased ticket prices for the 2009 season.

The majority of seats in the bowl of the stadium will be increased by $10, and the upper-deck seats will increase by $5. The biggest bump of $15 are for some club seats and lower level seating around midfield, which are the most sought-after tickets at M&T Bank Stadium.

--The Ravens' 2009 home opponents are: the three AFC North teams (Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Cleveland), Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Kansas City and Indianapolis. Their road opponents are: the three AFC North teams (Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Cleveland), Green Bay, Minnesota, San Diego, Oakland and New England.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "The uncomfortable thing about me is that I'm even having this conversation. With everything I've given to that city, I've always felt that this is one conversation that I would never have and didn't want to have." -- Linebacker Ray Lewis, a pending free agent, on his disappointment of not reaching a new extension yet with the Ravens.
