Baltimore Ravens Notes, Quotes 2009-02-09
--The Ravens promoted inside linebackers coach Greg Mattison to defensive coordinator. He replaces Rex Ryan, who became the New York Jets head coach.

John Harbaugh's decision to promote from within was to keep continuity and the same scheme.

"I'm very humbled and very proud to be named the coordinator of the Ravens," Mattison said at a news conference. "I think the biggest thing I plan on doing is utilizing a great staff. Our defensive staff is out of sight, and we will work very closely together in making sure we keep moving toward that bar that's been established, the way we play defense here."

Special assistant Vic Fangio became the linebackers coach, and special teams coach Jerry Rosburg will take over the title of assistant head coach, previously held by Ryan.

--After George Kokinis left to become the Cleveland Browns' general manager, the Ravens announced three promotions in their personnel department.

General manager Ozzie Newsome announced new job descriptions for Eric DeCosta (director of player personnel), Vincent Newsome (director of pro personnel) and Joe Hortiz (director of college scouting).

"All of these men have been with the Baltimore Ravens for the bulk of our organization's existence," Newsome said in a statement. "They have been involved in every facet of the acquisition of our players, and they understand our process. They are all looking forward to their new challenge, and the energy they bring to their positions will continue to make us better."

--After a decade with the Ravens, Rex Ryan has left to become the New York Jets head coach.

Ryan, 46, agreed to a four-year contract worth roughly $11.5 million.

"I think it's a gain for them and a loss for us, but it's well-deserved," Ravens linebacker Bart Scott sad. "It was a long time coming."

Said safety Jim Leonhard: "You could tell he wanted to be a head coach. He has the track record and he deserves everything he gets right now."

--Running back Willis McGahee is expected to make a full recovery after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship Game.

McGahee said he has a concussion and his neck is extremely sore. The injuries shouldn't interfere with him playing next season, he said.

"I'm all right. Everything's OK," McGahee said. "The MRI and CAT scans checked out good, so everything's good."

--It's no sure thing that the Ravens will bring back kicker Matt Stover, who becomes an unrestricted free agent in March. Stover is the last remaining player from the team's move from Cleveland.

"Coach (John) Harbaugh and I had a discussion and he did suggest that he wanted me back, but we'll see how it all works out," Stover said. "Hopefully, we can work it out. We'll see where it all lies in March. I'll take some time off and see what the Ravens want to do and what else is out there in the league."

--The Ravens will select 26th in the first round of the NFL Draft.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "This is our beginning. This is not an ending by any stretch. We look forward, so we can't wait to take the next step." -- Ravens coach John Harbaugh after the Ravens lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship Game.
