Baltimore Ravens Notes, Quotes 2008-10-10
--Ravens coach John Harbaugh has given rookie first-round pick Joe Flacco the starting quarterback job for the rest of the season. It was previously unknown whether Troy Smith, a contender for the starting job in the preseason, would be able to battle Flacco when he recovered from a tonsil infection.

But Harbaugh said that Smith would remain the No. 3 quarterback this week and would only be able to compete this season for the backup job, which is currently being held by Todd Bouman.

"That'll be (Smith's) role this year -- possibly into a role where he can contribute playing quarterback for us down the road," Harbaugh said.

--The Ravens have fallen into some bad habits, committing 19 penalties in two weeks. Two personal fouls -- OLB Jarret Johnson in Pittsburgh and LB Terrell Suggs against Tennessee -- have played a role in a couple of three-point losses.

After Sunday's game, Suggs suggested officials look at the Ravens more closely than other teams. Harbaugh didn't address the issue, saying, "that's history."

"We've got competitive guys, men of integrity," he said. "We're going to be a rough, tough, hard-hitting and hard-playing football team. We're going to do it with class and within the rules and with great self-discipline. That's where we're going as a football team."

--Matt Stover, the third-most accurate field-goal kicker in NFL history, has surprisingly struggled, missing three of seven attempts this season. His 45-yarder that sailed wide right Sunday was magnified by the fact that the Ravens lost by three points.

"It's not so much age as it is knocking it through the uprights," Harbaugh said of his 40-year-old kicker. "Sometimes, Matt is thinking about the direction of the kick instead of punching it right between the sticks. We have confidence in Matt. I know he can kick. Matt knows he can kick. I don't doubt for one second that he's going to make a ton of field goals for us."

--RB Willis McGahee shouldered the blame for last Sunday's loss to the Tennessee Titans. He was held for zero yards on his last four carries on the Ravens' possession before the Titans' game-winning drive.

"We had that last drive, and I wasn't getting any yardage," said McGahee, who accomplished his oft-stated goal last week of finishing a game. "It was no gain, no gain, loss of one yard. You can put that on me because even though they were coming straight through, I'm still supposed to get to the line of scrimmage."

--The Ravens are six points away from being undefeated, but that has provided little solace to the players. The Ravens led 13-3 until Pittsburgh scored 14 points in a 15-second span in the third quarter and prevailed, 23-20, in overtime. The Ravens had a 10-6 lead with less than six minutes left in the fourth quarter against the Titans. "I tell you what, it's getting old," defensive tackle Justin Bannan said.

--TE Todd Heap's four catches for 41 yards Sunday exceeded his season totals entering the game (three catches for 37 yards).

--Five players have recorded interceptions for the Ravens this season. Chris McAlister leads the team with three.

--The Ravens have also struggled against the AFC South, losing seven of the past eight meetings with teams from that division.

BY THE NUMBERS: 1 -- The Ravens' NFL ranking in overall defense, run defense and pass defense.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We continue to have each other's backs. There's an attitude among the players that says, 'You can count on me in adversity.' Our guys will get through these times." -- Coach John Harbaugh, on the Ravens losing two straight and falling to 2-2.
