Baltimore Ravens Notes, Quotes 2008-09-04
--Ed Reed practiced for the first time this summer without his red jersey, which apparently means he has been cleared for hitting. The free safety is dealing with a nerve impingement in his neck and shoulder.

Doctors have told him to rest a couple of weeks, Reed said. But he is attempting to play in the season opener.

"If I feel like I can go out there and be effective, that's what I am going to do," Reed said. "But at the same time, I'm going to be smart and try to strengthen it as much as possible."

There is a possibility that the injury could cut Reed's season short.

"If it keeps lingering throughout the season, it definitely could come to some point to where we shut it down for the year, rest it and strengthen it over the next offseason," he said. "Right now, it's just focus on the day to day and try to get it better."

--Linebacker/defensive end Terrell Suggs laughed when asked about the Ravens being labeled as a rebuilding team.

"I guess if the shoe fits, wear it," he said. "We're just going to have to prove that we're not a rebuilding team. We are a young team, but as in years past, some young teams have had some success. We can't let anything that doesn't pertain to football affect us. If we go out there and execute our assignments and play to the best of our ability, I think we'll be all right."

--Since he was drafted in the first round in 2003, Kyle Boller was linked to Brian Billick.

Does that mean Joe Flacco will forever be connected with coach John Harbaugh?

"Wow, that's a great question," Harbaugh said. "You guys will have to answer that one."

--Of the previous nine seasons that defensive end Marques Douglas has spent in the NFL, his best -- statistically speaking -- was in 2004, his final year with the Ravens. That's why Douglas, 31, was ecstatic when he learned that the team had acquired him from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for two draft picks.

"Best is a small word," Douglas said. He was brought in to replace Dwan Edwards, who was placed on injured reserve with a back injury. "It was an awesome experience when I got that call at about 5:30 (p.m.) that I was coming back to Baltimore. I was like, 'I'm all for it.'"

--Sam Koch knows it's only the preseason, but even he is slightly encouraged by the results.

Koch's gross punting average of 47.3 yards on 24 punts in the preseason is higher than his averages of 43.6 yards last season and 43.0 in 2006.

It's a good start for the Ravens punter, but Koch has been tempering his excitement.

"I was pleased, but I can do better," he said. "A couple of punts weren't what I wanted. They felt good coming off the foot. ... I'm just trying to work on the little details and fine-tune the direction and distance of the ball."

BY THE NUMBERS: 13 -- Number of Pro Bowl players on their roster, including two offseason acquisitions, fullback Lorenzo Neal and special teams ace Brendon Ayanbadejo.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "He's as level-headed as any rookie I've ever seen come in. I don't think it's too big for him. Like any rookie, he's going to have to learn and learn fast. You never know -- he could come in and light it up. He has that capability and he has that talent." -- Tight end Todd Heap, on rookie quarterback Joe Flacco.
