Baltimore Ravens Notes, Quotes 2008-08-18
--Terrell Suggs will report to the Ravens before the third preseason game, ending a 23-day absence from the team, a source said.

The two-time Pro Bowl player will sign his franchise tag tender that will pay him $8.5 million this season as a hybrid defensive end-linebacker. Suggs, 25, is scheduled to practice Monday and participate in about 15 plays in the third preseason contest at the St. Louis Rams. He would likely sit out the preseason finale and be ready to play in the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

It is believed that Suggs will sign his contract without asking for a condition that would prevent the Ravens from franchising him again next season.

--Linebacker Ray Lewis played only a few series wearing the defensive radio helmet in the preseason opener, but he seems to like it so far.

This past offseason, NFL owners approved the installation of defensive transmitters in helmets. Quarterbacks have used offensive helmet transmitters since the policy was adopted in 1994.

"It's cool," Lewis said. "It gives you the same advantage our offense has had. I think you will be able to test it more once you get in front of the crowd and not have to run to the sideline every play or signal in for three or four guys. So I think that's going to be great."

--Unlike previous years, the rookies were not tied to the goal posts or showered with shaving cream on the final day of training camp.

"We haven't had any hazing," coach John Harbaugh said. "We've talked about that. We're not a hazing team."

--The players were excused from practice and meetings in the evening during the final week of training camp when kicker Matt Stover converted a 48-yard field goal during the morning session.

Coach John Harbaugh issued the challenge to Stover, who was mobbed by his teammates after the kick.

"John knows how to put pressure on a guy," Stover said. "You've got to be able to put yourself in those situations as a kicker. There's nothing that can replicate that other than a game, and that's as close as you can get. In fact, I think that was worse than kicking a game-winner because you don't want to let your guys down."

--The team announced an attendance of 85,073 for this year's entire training camp. That's the fourth-largest overall attendance at camp behind 111,492 in 2001, 90,370 in 2002 and 86,872 in 2005, and those years included at least one scrimmage.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "I'm going to play with a chip on my shoulder. You get angry when you've been at the top of your game, when you're rated the No. 1 fullback and then free agency comes, and I kind of felt like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Because of my age, I got left out of the reindeer games. Because you're 37, teams are saying, 'OK, but your age.' Teams discriminate against you because of your age, not because of what you can do. Those people that are out there that doubted me, I'm back, and I'm coming for everybody that doubted me." -- Newly signed FB Lorenzo Neal, on his motivation.
