Baltimore Ravens Notes, Quotes 2009-05-08
--Ravens coach John Harbaugh acknowledges it's a risk, but it's one that the team is willing to make.

Instead of re-signing Matt Stover, the Ravens will first look at Steve Hauschka and Graham Gano to be their kicker. Stover has been the only kicker in the Ravens' 13-year existence.

Hauschka was the Ravens' kickoff specialist last season as a rookie, and Gano is an undrafted rookie out of Florida State.

"We know we're out on the limb. We know it's a risk," Harbaugh said. "But it's a no-choice situation for us. Everybody is a little anxious about it, but we have to find out at some point if we can have one kicker on our 53-man roster who can do both (kickoff and field goals) and who is a younger guy.

"The fact that Matt's contract is up, this year made it the time. It's kind of out of our control. The good thing is Matt has held the option open (to come back). He understands totally, and he knows there is a chance that he can be the kicker next year."

Hauschka was 1-for-2 on field goals last season when the Ravens used him as their long-range option. He converted a 54-yard field goal and missed a 53-yarder.

Gano won the Lou Groza Award for the nation's top place-kicker.

--Even though Greg Mattison is taking over for Rex Ryan at defensive coordinator, coach John Harbaugh said the philosophy on defense won't change.

"All of the good things you've seen in our defense are going to be even better than they were before," Harbaugh said. "We're still going to be blitz oriented. We're going to keep having multiple fronts and coverages on defense. We're the most multiple blitz coverage team in the league, and we're going to build on that. We're going to disguise blitzes even better than in the past. But that was going to be the same even if Rex stayed."

--Four veteran wide receivers -- Jerry Porter, Kelley Washington, D.J. Hackett and Tab Perry -- will try out for the Ravens at this weekend's minicamp.

Depending on the workouts, the Ravens could sign all or none of the receivers, a team official said. The team is expected to make a decision Monday.

The Ravens are looking for size, bringing in four receivers who are at least 6-feet-2, 200 pounds.

--Even though this is the Ravens' first full-team minicamp, they have had an impressive showing in their offseason program.

Some players who usually don't attend -- linebacker Ray Lewis and safety Ed Reed -- both participated the past two weeks. Other than Willie Anderson, the offensive linemen have been at Ravens headquarters the entire offseason.

"Over 50 guys have been here every day," coach John Harbaugh said.

--Rookies, quarterbacks and selected veterans will report to Ravens training camp July 27, the team announced. The rest of the team will arrive at McDaniel College on July 29.

The Ravens have scheduled 25 days of practice before moving back to team headquarters in Owings Mills. This marks the 14th year that the Ravens have held training camp in Westminster.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "We've done a great job of building momentum within the program. The wheel is spinning a lot faster now because everybody understands where their grip is and where they're pulling. We've had such a good offseason." -- Coach John Harbaugh on the state of his team heading into the first minicamp.
