Baltimore Ravens Notes, Quotes 2009-03-27
--The Ravens could be in line for a season opener at M&T Bank Stadium.

There were rumors that the NFL would begin this season with Ravens-Steelers, a rematch of the AFC Championship Game, for its Thursday night game. But the Ravens asked not to play a prime-time game at Heinz Field this season when they submitted their scheduling requests to the league.

There is a possibility that the Ravens could start the season at home. Because the Orioles are away on Sept. 13, the Ravens would be able to host a Week 1 game (the Orioles are home on Sept. 14, which rules out a home Monday night game).

The Ravens, who opened the 2008 season at home against Cincinnati, have not kicked off consecutive seasons at home since they moved to their downtown stadium in 1998.

--The Ravens signed L.J. Smith to a one-year, $1.5 million contract after he passed his physical.

Smith, 28, becomes the first player that coach John Harbaugh has signed from the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was a longtime assistant.

"We are very pleased to add such a talented and experienced tight end," Harbaugh said. "Obviously I had the opportunity to be around L.J. for a number of years in Philadelphia, and there is a comfort level that we have with each other. I know that he is a good fit as a Raven and will be a great addition to our team."

--General manager Ozzie Newsome had selfish reasons for wanting to close the deal with Ray Lewis this offseason.

"I couldn't go to the drug store, I couldn't go to dinner, I couldn't stop at the gas station without someone asking me whether we were going to re-sign Ray," he said. "So now, I can have my life back."

--The Ravens' 2009 home opponents are: the three AFC North teams (Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Cleveland), Chicago, Detroit, Denver, Kansas City and Indianapolis. Their road opponents are: the three AFC North teams (Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and Cleveland), Green Bay, Minnesota, San Diego, Oakland and New England.

QUOTE TO NOTE: "You have to like Baltimore. They won 11 games last year with a rookie head coach and a rookie quarterback. They have a good football team. They have a great defense, they have a quarterback who proved he's their quarterback of the future, he's a guy on the rise. You have to respect that." -- Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin on which team should be favored to win the AFC North.
