Baltimore Ravens Inside Slant 2008-10-16
The Ravens could be looking for revenge.

It was only last season when the Miami Dolphins got their only victory of the season by beating the Ravens in overtime.

It was only last season when Cam Cameron was fired as the Dolphins head coach after just one season.

But the Ravens aren't looking into their past for motivation.

They just need a win in the most desperate way.

"We know this is our season," linebacker Terrell Suggs said. "It's gotten to be taken that this could make or break our season. Everybody thought maybe it was the Pittsburgh game or the Tennessee game. But this is it.

"You lose this one, you're going to get guys starting to wither off and starting to jump off the bandwagon. So, we're trying to keep everyone on."

The biggest storyline is Cameron facing his old team.

The Dolphins went 1-15 under Cameron, who became the Ravens' offensive coordinator after being dismissed in Miami.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Cameron "did a great job last year for what he had to work with."

But Cameron can't worry about his past because he has too many problems in the present.

Cameron's biggest challenge is reducing the turnovers for rookie quarterback Joe Flacco. Only San Francisco's J.T. O'Sullivan has thrown more interceptions this season (eight) than Flacco (seven). In his past two games, Flacco has thrown five picks, averaging one every 11 passes in that rut.

"It's just an issue of him learning from those mistakes," coach John Harbaugh said. "We keep saying that, but we don't want the turnovers next week. We're going to press real hard and he's going to work hard to make it sooner rather than later."

Another issue is the Ravens' offensive line. The Ravens' young offensive line will be without right guard Marshal Yanda (knee) for the rest of the season and are dealing with two banged-up tackles (Jared Gaither and Adam Terry).

"It's definitely tough," guard Ben Grubbs said. "For us, it's not five guys. It's one heartbeat. When you lose a starter, it's like a piece of me left. But I think with the work that we do this week, we will get that same continuity with Chris (Chester, Yanda's replacement) and move on."

Cameron also has to find away to generate big plays. In his first five games, Flacco has completed only five passes over 20 yards. His yards per attempt is 5.86, which is 26th in the league.

Harbaugh explained that the lack of deep throws is a "combination of things." There are times when Flacco misses an open receiver. There are times when the receivers fail to get open. And there are times when Flacco sees the open receiver and can't make the throw because of defensive pressure.

As a result, the Ravens' top three receivers -- Mason, Mark Clayton and Demetrius Williams -- are averaging a modest 10.3 yards per catch.

"We have to get better as a team," Flacco said. "It all starts with me on the offensive side of the ball."

SERIES HISTORY: 7th regular-season meeting. Ravens trail series, 5-1. The Ravens have lost all four regular-season meetings in Miami. Last season, the Ravens lost, 22-16, in overtime to the previously winless Dolphins. Three plays after Ravens kicker Matt Stover hooked a potential game-winning field-goal attempt, little-known Miami receiver Greg Camarillo caught a short pass over the middle and out-sprinted the defense for a game-winning, 64-yard touchdown.
