Baltimore Ravens Inside Slant 2008-10-10
After two weeks of going toe-to-toe with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Tennessee Titans, the Ravens expect more of a finesse game Sunday against the Indianapolis Colts.

"Peyton's going to want to go back there and go through all the little games. Then, he'll call at the line trying to play with Ray (Lewis) and our secondary," linebacker Terrell Suggs said. "But we'll try not to give him anything. Like I said, it isn't going to be the physical game it's been the last two weeks."

Lewis considers matching up against Manning "a chess match."

"He's trying to put his players in the right position (and) I'm trying to make sure mine are in the right position," Lewis said. "You just kind of get two brains going. It's just really having fun. Sometimes I walk up to the line and I'll say something that has nothing to do with football. It just turns out to be a great game."

Manning has been one of the few quarterbacks to have success against the Ravens. In six games against the Ravens, he has thrown 13 touchdowns and averaged 283 yards passing.

But Manning has a lot of respect for the Ravens, especially Lewis. Like Manning, Lewis studies tape and picks up on tendencies.

"There's many a time when I've heard Ray calling out our plays, and he's been pretty accurate at times," Manning said. "It's always impressive to watch him play. I don't know if I necessarily enjoy it, but it's a challenge."

Most of the Ravens prefer a physical game to the one dictated by Manning.

"I would rather grind your 11 up against our 11 and go play football," Suggs said. "Not too many teams can do that with us. I think Peyton knows that, so he's got to do his little games at the line."

The Ravens have the NFL's top-ranked pass defense. They have limited quarterbacks to a 46.2 percent completion rate, allowing three touchdowns while intercepting seven passes.

But these numbers might be deceiving at this time.

Like last season, the Ravens will face their showdown with Manning with a banged-up secondary.

Two cornerbacks (Samari Rolle and Fabian Washington) and one safety (Dawan Landry) could all miss Sunday's game between the Ravens (2-2) and the Colts (2-2) because of injury.

When the secondary was depleted last season, Manning threw four touchdown passes in a 44-20 rout.

"It's always a challenge," Ravens coach John Harbaugh said of facing Manning. "Our secondary will be at full strength for the guys that are healthy. The guys that will go out there will be counted on to get the job done. I think they'll play really well."

SERIES HISTORY: Ninth meeting. Ravens trail series, 6-2. The Colts, who relocated from Baltimore in 1984, beat the Ravens for the fifth straight time last season, 44-20. Peyton Manning threw four touchdown passes and the Colts built a 30-point lead by the second quarter. The Ravens were missing both starting cornerbacks (Chris McAlister and Samari Rolle). The Ravens are 0-3 in Indianapolis.
