A year after finding their franchise quarterback in Joe Flacco, the Ravens might have found their long-term solution at backup quarterback.

John Beck, a 2007 second-round pick of the Miami Dolphins, signed a one-year contract with the Ravens and will compete against Troy Smith for the Ravens' No. 2 job.

Because of his demeanor and film study, Beck is probably better suited to be a backup over Smith, a former Heisman Trophy winner who believes he should be a starting quarterback.

Beck, who was released by the Dolphins, reportedly drew interest from six teams. He eventually chose the Ravens over the Jacksonville Jaguars.

"He was a very productive college player, but what also impressed our scouts was how competitive he is," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "We like to bring in good athletes who love to compete and he fits that."

Beck, who will turn 28 before the season begins, will be reunited with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron, who was the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2007 when they drafted the Brigham Young standout in the second round. The Dolphins released Beck on Wednesday, just five days after they drafted West Virginia's Pat White in the second round.

As a rookie, Beck lost all four of his starts midway through the Dolphins' then-winless season, throwing three interceptions and no touchdowns. He fumbled seven times (losing five) and was sacked 10 times.

Last season, Beck fell behind Chad Pennington and Chad Henne on the depth chart and did not appear in a game.

Beck, who is 6-feet-2, 216 pounds, was one of the top quarterbacks coming out of college after throwing for 7,594 yards and 59 touchdowns in his final two seasons at BYU.

He was the 40th player chosen in 2007 and the fourth quarterback taken, following JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn and Kevin Kolb. The Dolphins signed Beck to a four-year deal, which included $3.25 million in guaranteed money.

Beck gets a fresh start with the Ravens. In five NFL games, he completed 60 of 107 passes for 559 yards. His career quarterback rating is 62.0.

Smith, Beck's chief competition, was selected 134 spots after Beck in the 2007 draft. He has appeared in 10 games, connecting on 43 of 80 passes (53.8 percent) for 534 yards. Smith's career quarterback rating is 87.2.

"You don't expect a guy as highly touted to be available at this stage," coach John Harbaugh said. "Our mindset is very aggressive in trying to make our team better every way we can. We're not done at making our roster better even though the draft is over."

With the addition of Beck, the Ravens no longer had a need for Todd Bouman. He was the Ravens' backup for the first five games of last season until Smith recovered from his tonsil infection. He remained on the team as the No. 3 quarterback.

Bouman had just re-signed with the Ravens on April 6.
