Nobody in Baltimore Wants the Starting Quarterback Job

As best I can tell, the player most likely to win the Ravens starting quarterback gig depends on the day of the week and wherever John Harbaugh’s dart lands. At this point, it’s basically a guessing game since neither Kyle Boller nor Troy Smith seem particularly interested in wresting control of the job.

Last night, Smith got the opportunity to start, following Boller’s mostly-positive effort last week. And as has been the case most of the preseason, both players had bright spots, but they also had some not-so-bright spots. Which is why Harbaugh has no idea who’ll be the starter when the season begins. Or, at the very least, he’s not willing to go public with it. Ravens coach John Harbaugh tried to shine the best light on his murky quarterback situation.

“I think they had some good moments and not so good moments,” Harbaugh said. “I think they both showed they can move the football in this league.” That was from p. 39 of the “Generic Answers to Any Football Question You Can Think Of” handbook. The ’s Jamison Hensley points out that Smith had more rushing yards (35) than passing (25), and that Boller didn’t lead the offense past the Vikings’ 28-yard line. If there’s something (anything?) to be excited about, first-round pick Joe Flacco was 10 of 15 for 74 yards, the best performance of the bunch. Hardly Hall of Fame worthy, but on this team, it doesn’t need to be.
