After Three-Week Vacation, Terrell Suggs Shows Up for Ravens Training Camp

It took more than three weeks, but Ravens linebacker/defensive end (depending on who’s writing the check) Terrell Suggs cut short his August vacation and will allegedly report to Ravens’ training camp today.

Baltimore franchised him Suggs this spring as a linebacker, but he balked because that would’ve paid him $800,000 less than if he had been franchised as a defensive end, a position he has played with some regularity during his five-year career.

Instead of going to arbitration, the two sides hammered out a compromise, basically creating a hybrid position and splitting the difference between the franchise payouts for linebackers and defensive ends.

And now, Suggs is in camp, he will presumably sign his $8.5 million tender, and get on with the business of stroking Ray Lewis’ ego. Suggs, 25, will miss his second preseason game tomorrow night but is scheduled to practice Monday and participate in about 15 plays in the third preseason contest at the St. Louis Rams. He would likely sit out the preseason finale and be ready to play in the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

It is believed that Suggs will sign his contract without asking for a condition that would prevent the Ravens from franchising him again next season. So, as has been the case since the Ravens came to Baltimore, the defense will be one of the top units in the league, and the offense, well, will not. Too bad Suggs doesn’t play quarterback.
